Thief

This taut, neon-soaked crime thriller marked Michael Mann’s breakthrough feature and established his signature “cool” aesthetic. James Caan gives a career-defining performance as Frank, a professional safecracker who assembles one last meticulous heist to escape his life of crime for a stunning wife (Tuesday Weld). The plan unravels with visceral violence when Frank is squeezed by a high-level mob boss (Robert Prosky) and corrupt cops. Featuring a pulse-pounding score by Tangerine Dream and a supporting cast of real-life thieves and police officers, the film’s technical accuracy and urban grit hit every nerve. A neo-noir essential, its sleek style and lonely-hero persona directly inspired the tone of later hits like Drive and Mann’s own masterpiece, Heat.
