Headsets may be checked out from the Box Office in the Kirby Lobby for Live Events. The Carolina Theatre has headphones as well as neck loops for T-Coil Hearing Aids. If you prefer, you can bring your own headphones since our ALD devices work with most standard headphones. Guests must turn in their driver’s license or similar ID card to ensure the device is returned after the event.

The Carolina Theatre of Durham is T-Coil compliant. If your hearing aids or cochlear implants have a built-in telecoil, you will be able to link up to our loop sound system without the use of an additional device.

Handicap vehicle (car and van) parking spaces are designated on Morgan Street and at the Durham Centre Parking Garage, located directly across from the Carolina Theatre of Durham at 300 W Morgan Street. Event parking is $7 and is paid with cash or card. Daytime parking (non-event) is available in the garage at a rate of $2.25 per hour. All handicap parking is subject to availability.

The Carolina Theatre of Durham provides interpreters for live entertainment events free of charge to the hearing impaired. To arrange for an interpreter, please call the Box Office at (919) 560-3030 and ask for a manager. Interpreters should be requested 45 days before the event to ensure proper service and scheduling. However, the Carolina Theatre will make every effort to solicit interpreters on short notice.

Interpreters will provide sign-language interpretations of the music or performance elements of the show to the extent provided by the production.

Most first-run films will have audio description and/or closed caption devices available for those who are visually or hearing impaired.

Audio description provides an ongoing oral explanation of what is happening on screen. The patron can wear a headset (which can be picked up from the Box Office), and no other guests will hear the headset audio.

Closed Caption Devices provide accurate, written captions of the dialogue on a small screen setup directly in front of the guest.

Most first-run films accommodate this technology; unfortunately, we don’t have this information until a film arrives.

All film festivals, including but not limited to the OUTSOUTH Queer Film Festival and all Retro Film Series films, will not have Audio Description or Closed Captioning available unless otherwise noted.

Elevators are available on all three levels of the Carolina Theatre to assist guests in moving from one level to another. One Elevator gives access to Orchestra Level, Balcony One, and Balcony Two in Fletcher Hall. The other Elevator gives access to the Cinema Box Office, Cinema One, and Cinema Two.

Guests with visual impairments may purchase special designated tickets in the Orchestra Level subject to availability. Service animals are permitted for the visually impaired. For more information on tickets for guests with visual impairments, please email efan@carolinatheatre.org.
