The Carolina Theatre’s DEI statement is the result of a collaborative effort between members of management, theater staff, and the Board of Trustees. We acknowledge that this is a starting point for actions and practices that will encourage equity and make an impact in our community. This statement will evolve as we continue to learn and grow.

We believe that arts and entertainment should be a positive, transformative, and inclusive cultural experience for all. The Carolina Theatre of Durham’s management and Board of Trustees recognizes the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion as a guiding principle for the organization. Our approach is linked to three foundational aspects of the theater’s culture: people, programs, and policies.

We are committed to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive space where everyone who enters our historic venue — patrons, artists, employees, volunteers, and vendors — is valued and respected. We oppose racism, discrimination, violence, and all forms of oppression. We embrace basic human dignity and equitable opportunity. We hold ourselves, and all who visit our theater, accountable for honoring these values of inclusivity and ensuring that each person feels safe, seen, and respected.

The people, programs, and policies of the theater define who we are as an organization and embody the diverse nature of Durham and the region.

  • We intentionally seek to have staff, board members, and volunteers who represent our diverse community.
  • We build a stronger theater and community by creating a safe environment to share ideas and ensuring that all voices have an opportunity to be heard.
  • We recognize our responsibility to learn and seek positive change in our daily interactions.

  • We understand that the foundation of a thriving arts venue is the cross-pollination of creativity and diversity in our programming.
  • We aspire to model diversity and inclusion in the arts and to serve our community’s cultural interests by reflecting unique life experiences in our programs.

  • We will examine and ensure that our company policies align with our values of inclusion, accessibility and belonging.
  • We will practice our values by being mindful of how we operate and with whom we partner.
