“Apollo” is a dance-theater work exploring intergenerational queer dynamics, memory, HIV/AIDS, and legacy. This biomythography uses dance-theater to delve into the intersection of personal history, cultural memory, and mythology. “Apollo” centers on legacy and connection and features bodies and voices that are left out of the canon. It confronts ageism and reimagines who gets to be seen and celebrated on stage. The work expands on what dance can be so bodies survive, thrive, and are witnessed.

“Apollo,” co-commissioned by Miami Light Project in partnership with Carolina Theatre of Durham, is a 2024 National Performance Network Creation & Development Fund Project, made possible with generous support from the Doris Duke Foundation and the Mellon Foundation. The work received a 2022 Creative Capital Award and support from Alternate ROOTS. “Apollo” was shaped through residencies at Miami Light Project, Carolina Theatre of Durham, Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC), Atlantic Center for the Arts, and The Movement Lab at Barnard College.

    Recommended for mature audiences.

    All-Bodies Community Workshop

Dance belongs to every body, at every age.
This free 90-minute workshop is especially for adults and elders who may not have had the chance to dance before, but are curious to explore movement in a supportive space.
Guided by artists of the Pioneer Winter Collective, you’ll step into the creative process behind “Apollo,” their newest dance-theater work about legacy, resilience, and intergenerational care. Workshop participants will be guided through accessible exercises, improvisation, choreography, and discussion to create their own movement portraits. All movement is adaptable, and participants are encouraged to honor their own bodies, abilities, and energy levels.
No prior dance experience is needed – just curiosity and willingness. Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement.
