Exhibit Recognizes the Individuals Who Protested for the Desegregation of the Theater
DURHAM, January 9, 2024 — The Carolina Theatre of Durham celebrates the 10th anniversary of its “Confronting Change” exhibit with a free event open to the public on April 17. The “Confronting Change” exhibit is dedicated to the civil rights movement in Durham and the protestors that advocated for the desegregation of the Carolina Theatre.
The April 17th event will feature a short documentary screening about the theater’s civil rights history, a reception, and a panel discussion by the original protestors. In order to add cultural and historical context, the theater will host a variety of events leading up to the April 17th celebration including a free screening of the documentary “February One” on February 1; a performance by Step Afrika! on February 9; and a civil rights panel discussion. A performance of “Show Way the Musical” for Durham County Public School students will take place on April 23.
The “Confronting Change” exhibit originally opened in 2014 to acknowledge the role the theater played in the civil rights movement and to honor those who took part in desegregating the theater. The exhibit includes photos and bios of the people involved in desegregating the theater, newspaper features on the events that took place, and replicas of the separate ticketing window.
The public is encouraged to visit the exhibit during the theater’s operating hours. Self-guided tours of the “Confronting Change” exhibit are open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guided tours are also available for groups of 25 or more when arranged in advance. All tours are free. To learn more about touring the Carolina Theatre and its exhibits, including “Confronting Change,” please visit carolinatheatre.org.
