DURHAM, NC — June 20, 2023 — RetroNoir Film Series begins on June 24 at the Carolina Theatre of Durham. RetroNoir is a weekend-long event from June 24-26, boasting classic noir films.

Noir films are typically dark, gritty, suspense-filled crime dramas featuring corrupt criminals, femme-fatales, and voice over narration from hard-boiled protagonists.

RetroNoir features fourteen black-and-white films from the 1940s to 1960s, the golden age of film noir. Films include John Huston’s “The Asphalt Jungle,” starring Marilyn Monroe, Robert Sidomak’s “The Killers” starring Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner, Fritz Lang’s “Ministry of Fear,” Akira Kurosawa’s “High and Low,” Raoul Walsh’s “White Heat,” starring James Cagney, and more.

“From classic black-and-white films to hardboiled detectives and femme fatales, these films will keep you guessing until the final frame,” says the Carolina Theatre’s Senior Director of Film, Jim Carl.

RetroNoir is part of the theater’s Retro Film Series, which hosts double-features of classic films most Friday nights and includes several sub-series of films including MovieDiva Film Series, a series featuring classic films with strong female leads; Retro Epics Film Series, featuring some of the most monumental movies in film history, and Retro: The Criterion Collection Film Series, which includes culturally important classic and contemporary films that are a part of Criterion’s archive.
