DURHAM, NC — March 14, 2023 — RetroGothic Film Series begins on March 24 at the Carolina Theatre of Durham.  RetroGothic is a weekend-long event from March 24-26, and features classic gothic horror films.

Gothic horror comprises of suspenseful stories of the supernatural. These stories typically feature vulnerable heroes and heroines preyed upon by monsters that embodied the anxieties of the masses during the 19th century, when the stories were originally written.

RetroGothic features film adaptations from the late 1950s to early 1970s of classic monster stories. Films include vampire films like “Horror of Dracula” and “Dracula Has Risen from the Grave,” movies about the horrors of reanimation such as “The Curse of Frankenstein” and “The Plague of the Zombies,” and films featuring black magic and the damned like “Black Sunday” and “Curse of the Demon.”

“Equally parts terrifying and titillating, RetroGothic is for those who prefer their horror movies to involve handsome vampires in velvet capes and heroines fleeing in terror while wearing flowing dresses,” says the Carolina Theatre’s Senior Director of Film, Jim Carl.

RetroGothic is part of the theater’s Retro Film Series, which hosts double-features of classic films most Friday nights and includes several sub-series of film including Disney-Quest, featuring classic animated Disney films; MovieDiva, a series focused on strong female leads; RetroNoir, boasting classic hard-boiled crime films, mysteries, and whodunnits; FantasticRealm, presenting imaginative adventure, fantasy, and sci-fi films from childhood; and Kaiju-Quest, a Japanese-genre focused on big monsters.
