DURHAM, NC — March 11, 2024 — RetroGothic Film Series runs from March 22-28 at the Carolina Theatre. The series features classic gothic and giallo horror films from the 1950s to early 1970s.

Gothic horror comprises of suspenseful stories of the supernatural featuring witches, vampires, and damned souls, while giallo is an Italian genre of murder-mystery fiction that often contains slasher, thriller, psychological horror, and sexploitation elements.

Films in the series include gothic vampire films such as “The House That Dripped Blood” and “The Vampire Doll” and cult-classic giallo slashers like “The Bird With The Crystal Plumage,” “Blood and Black Lace,” and “Deep Red.”

“RetroGothic is the counterpart to our beloved SplatterFlix Film Series, but this one is for those who prefer their horror movies to involve polite vampires in velvet capes or killers wearing black gloves,” says the Carolina Theatre’s Senior Director of Film, Jim Carl.

RetroGothic is part of the theater’s Retro Film Series, which hosts double-features of classic films most Friday nights and includes several sub-series of film including RetroNoir Film Series, boasting classic hard-boiled crime films, mysteries, and whodunnits; Retro Epics Film Series, featuring some of the most monumental movies in film history; MovieDiva, a series focused on strong female leads; Retro: The Criterion Collection, which features culturally important classic and contemporary films that are a part of Criterion’s archive; and more.
