Retro: The Criterion Collection Film Series Runs July 21-23 at Carolina Theatre of Durham

DURHAM, NC — July 17, 2023 — Retro: The Criterion Collection Film Series begins on July 21 at the Carolina Theatre of Durham. The weekend-long series, ending July 23, features films that are part of Criterion’s archive. 

The Criterion Collection is an American home-video distribution company that restores, preserves, and distributes the most important films of all time. The ongoing collection includes culturally significant classic and contemporary films of all genres.  

Retro: The Criterion Collection will feature fourteen films from the collection including Wong Kar Wai’s “In the Mood For Love,” Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull,” Akira Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo,” Alfred Hitchcock’s “Notorious,” and more.   

The series will also include a screening of Ron Shelton’s “Bull Durham,” to commemorate the film’s 35th anniversary. “Bull Durham” was shot in Durham, North Carolina, and premiered at the Carolina Theatre of Durham. The screening at Retro: Criterion Collection will be the sports comedy’s first time back at the Carolina Theatre since 1988.

“The Criterion Collection aims to reflect the breadth of filmed expression. Similarly, this Retro series will feature some of the most notable movies in film history, from the most esteemed directors from around the world.” says the Carolina Theatre’s Senior Director of Film, Jim Carl. 

Retro: The Criterion Collection is part of the theater’s Retro Film Series, which hosts double-features of classic films most Friday nights and includes several sub-series of films including MovieDiva Film Series, a series featuring classic films with strong female leads; Retro Epics Film Series, featuring some of the most monumental movies in film history; and Kaiju-Quest, a Japanese genre of film focused on big monsters.
