Film Fan Holds Seventh-Annual Fundraiser for CTD’s Retro Film Series
January 8, 2020 by
Marc Wasserman loves the Retro Film Series so much, he’s running his seventh marathon.
That is, he’s running his seventh-annual movie marathon fundraiser — watching 12 movies in 24 hours — to raise funds for The Carolina Theatre of Durham’s Retro Film Series. The theatre is operated by the nonprofit Carolina Theatre of Durham, Inc.
Moved by the struggle of independent cinemas in the streaming age, Wasserman decided to take matters into his own hands with a “12 Movies in 24 Hours” marathon. Years later, this tradition has raised thousands of dollars for the nonprofit.
Wasserman and co. will begin watching films at 4 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, but supporters can get the fun started early. For every $25 donation before Jan. 11, they will reveal one of the movies in the marathon.
This year’s goal is $900, all of which will support the Retro Film Series. $150 sponsors one film, while $300 sponsors an entire Friday night double-feature. Wasserman’s goal of $900 would entirely sponsor six films.
