The Center for Death Penalty Litigation will host the public launch of Racist Roots, a powerful short film that reveals the North Carolina death penalty’s deep entanglement with slavery, lynching and racism — and inspires people to join the movement to transform the criminal legal system. This 25-minute film traces the history of the death penalty and includes the stories and voices of advocates, artists, exonerees, and people on North Carolina’s death row. Screening will be followed by a panel discussion including one of the filmmakers, a capital defense attorney turned state legislator, and an innocent man who was sentenced to death in North Carolina. All who attend will learn how to get involved in the ongoing work to make the death penalty history.

This event is free, but registration is requested.
