Young and Innocent

Alfred Hitchcock’s early British thriller perfectly captures the “innocent man on the run” trope that became his cinematic signature. When a young man (Derrick De Marney) discovers the body of a famous actress on a beach, he is immediately accused of her murder. Escaping police custody, he teams up with the local constable’s spunky daughter (Nova Pilbeam) to track down the real killer—a man with a distinctive nervous twitch. From daring escapes to a climactic, visually stunning ballroom sequence, the film blends lighthearted romance with mounting tension. A rare look at Hitchcock’s developing genius, this fast-paced mystery showcases the wit and technical audacity that would soon make him a global legend.
