THE SOURCE: Harper Lee’s 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

THE ADAPTATION: Widely regarded by scholars as the “Gold Standard” of literary translation, this film achieved a rare feat: satisfying the author’s intent while creating an independent cultural icon. Screenwriter Horton Foote skillfully maintained the novel’s “Southern Gothic” atmosphere by retaining the child’s-eye perspective of Scout. Lee herself was so moved by the adaptation that she became close friends with Gregory Peck, stating the film captured the “soul” of her story without losing its moral weight. It remains the definitive example of how to preserve a book’s dignity on the silver screen.

Viewer’s Guide: Racial slurs, adult themes, and depictions of racial injustice.
