Rob Reiner’s THE PRINCESS BRIDE (PG, 1987, 98 min)
“As you wish.” Laughs erupt and swords clash in this delectable satire of classic fairy tales that is equal parts romantic adventure and zany comedy. When the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright) is kidnapped to be the bride of the odious Prince Humperdinck, her true love Westley (Cary Elwes)—operating as the Dread Pirate Roberts—returns to rescue her. He is joined by an unforgettable ensemble including an expert Spanish swordsman driven by revenge (Mandy Patinkin), a gentle giant (André the Giant), and a crafty Sicilian criminal (Wallace Shawn). With a sharp-witted script and sparkling dialogue, this “good parts” version of a story about true love and high adventure is a once-beloved gem that hits every nerve.

Richard Donner’s LADYHAWKE (PG, 1985, 121 min)
In a world of medieval myth, a tragic curse separates two lovers: by day she is a hawk, and by night he is a wolf. Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer star as the star-crossed pair who can only see each other in human form for a fleeting moment at dawn and dusk. With the help of a wisecracking young thief named “The Mouse” (Matthew Broderick), they embark on a perilous journey to break the spell of a vengeful Bishop. Featuring a unique synth-driven score and stunning cinematography, the film is a sweeping, atmospheric fantasy that captures the “cinematic wonder” of a legendary romance.
