The Coen Brothers’ THE BIG LEBOWSKI (R, 1998, 117 min)

“The Dude abides.” Jeff Bridges stars as Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, a laid-back L.A. slacker who just wants his rug back after it’s ruined by two debt collectors who have the wrong guy. This case of mistaken identity spirals into a zany, sprawling caper involving a motley crew of nihilists, a kidnapped trophy wife, and a bowling-obsessed veteran (John Goodman). With a sharp-witted script and dreamlike musical sequences, the film is a masterclass in deadpan humor and “cult-favorite” imagination. It is a stylish, hilarious romp through the bizarre underbelly of Los Angeles that proves sometimes the most compelling words are spoken over a White Russian.

Followed by:

Terry Gilliam’s FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS (R, 1998, 118 min)

Based on the seminal “Gonzo” book by Hunter S. Thompson. Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro ignite the screen as journalist Raoul Duke and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, as they tear across the Nevada desert in a drug-fueled search for the American Dream. Director Terry Gilliam translates Thompson’s visceral, psychedelic prose into a visual masterwork of distorted reality and neon-soaked madness. With its “jaw-hitting-the-floor” energy and unhinged performances, the film is a surreal, high-octane journey into the heart of 1970s counter-culture. It remains a provocative exploration of excess and a definitive piece of “atmospheric wonder” that hits every nerve.
