My Man Godfrey

90th Anniversary!

One of the most charming and inventive screwball comedies of the 1930s, this definitive classic stars William Powell and Carole Lombard in a pairing that crackles with comedic brilliance. Lombard’s ditzy socialite Irene Bullock “wins” a derelict (Powell) during a scavenger hunt and hires him as the family butler, only to find he is far more sophisticated than anyone suspects. Radically blending the giddy energy of high-society satire with a heart of gold, the film turned romantic chemistry into a source of pure delight. Nominated for six Oscars, including all four acting categories, every line of dialogue sparkles with wit and effortless charm. My Man Godfrey remains a timeless testament to the magic of the studio system at its very finest.
