“Two Little Girls from Little Rock,” red-sequined goddesses, burst from the screen in a quest for love and money, but mostly money. Based on a slight, but wildly popular novel and a Broadway musical by Anita Loos (who also co-wrote “The Women”). Dorothy Shaw and Lorelei Lee are showgirls and best pals, cruising on a transatlantic voyage to Paris in super saturated Technicolor and dazzling costumes by William Travilla. The choreography by Jack Cole stuns: “Is there anyone here for love?” is possibly the most homoerotic dance number ever in classic Hollywood and “Diamonds are a girls’ best friend” is sheer perfection and can be enjoyed a hundred times. The men are wimps, no match for the extraordinary power and magnetism of the women, who pretend to be stupid and helpless, but are thoroughly in command.
