Martin Scorsese’s CAPE FEAR (R, 1991, 128 min)

Robert De Niro delivers a terrifying, powerhouse performance as Max Cady, a convicted rapist who is released from prison and begins a systematic campaign of psychological warfare against his former lawyer, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte). Scorsese’s visceral reimagining of the 1962 classic is a stylish, operatic thriller that explores the thin line between civilization and savagery. With an unsettling score and a climax that turns a family houseboat trip into a visceral battle for survival, the film is a dark masterwork of suspense. It is an exhilarating exploration of guilt, vengeance, and the predator lurking in the shadows.

Jonathan Mostow’s BREAKDOWN (R, 1997, 93 min)

Action shifts to high gear in this relentless, white-knuckle thriller! While driving cross-country, Jeff Taylor (Kurt Russell) and his wife Amy find themselves stranded on a desolate desert highway when their car breaks down. After Amy hitches a ride with a friendly trucker to find help, she disappears without a trace. Jeff is thrust into a desperate, high-stakes hunt for his missing wife, facing a terrifying group of locals who are hiding a dark secret. Kurt Russell shines as the ordinary man pushed to extraordinary limits in this fast-paced, “edge-of-your-seat” caper that proves the open road can be a nightmare of pure adrenaline.
