Almost Famous

“It’s all happening.” This semi-autobiographical coming-of-age masterpiece follows 15-year-old William Miller (Patrick Fugit), an earnest music fan who bluffs his way into a Rolling Stone assignment to tour with the rising rock band Stillwater. Fueled by an era-defining soundtrack featuring Led Zeppelin, Elton John, and Simon & Garfunkel, the film captures the early 1970s when rock idealism first collided with massive commerce. As William navigates the ego wars between guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and the enigmatic Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), he discovers the painful beauty of passing from naive youth into adulthood. A joyous, music-driven romp that won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, it remains a visceral love letter to the power of rock ’n’ roll.
