Dance Theatre of Harlem Performs at the Carolina Theatre of Durham Prior to Artistic Director Virginia Johnson’s Retirement

DURHAM, NC — October 3, 2022 — Dance Theatre of Harlem Artistic Director Virginia Johnson has announced her retirement from the visionary company at the end of the 2022-23 season in June 2023. Before her retirement, the company will perform one of its final programs under her direction at the Carolina Theatre on October 27, 2022.
Johnson served as Artistic Director of the company for twelve years, preceded by a staggering 28 years as a company member which was highlighted by her distinction as a founding member and as a Principal Dancer. Following her retirement, she will go on to serve the Dance Theatre of Harlem as Artistic Director Emerita.
Now a singular presence in the ballet world, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company tours nationally and internationally, presenting a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 18-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and resident choreographer Robert Garland, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate founder Arthur Mitchell’s belief that ballet belongs to everyone. Through performances, community engagement and arts education, the company carries forward Dance Theatre of Harlem’s message of empowerment through the arts for all.
