Taking “no” for an answer was not an option for the heroes that lined Durham streets in peaceful protest in the 1960s. This exhibit tells the story of the desegregation of the Carolina Theater and the people dedicated to making certain their theater, and their community, had equal access for all.

A decade ago, the Carolina Theatre of Durham’s Civil Rights Committee, composed of community leaders and individuals with lived experiences fought for the desegregation of the theater, came together to ensure that the theater’s history would never be forgotten through the creation of a historical exhibit called “Confronting Change.”

“Confronting Change” shares the story of the youth protestors that successfully desegregated the Carolina Theatre in the 1960s after years of protest. The exhibit includes photos, news reels, and bios on the protesters and their experiences. In 2024, we will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the exhibit and its lasting effect on our community.

The deadline to receive printed marketing benefits is March 8, to be included in signage for the event. Donations may still be made after the deadline.
