DURHAM, NC — May 31, 2022 — The Carolina Theatre of Durham’s inaugural fundraiser, “Dancing With The Carolina Stars” raised more than $98,000. Funds raised from the event will support the historic nonprofit theater’s continual building improvements and educational programs.
“Dancing With The Carolina Stars” featured local celebrities paired with professional dancers in a dance competition to raise money for the theater. Pairs included Jennings Brody of Parker and Otis with professional ballroom dancer, David Therrell; Nadira Hurley of Vert and Vogue with Willie Hinton of the Carolina Ballet; Chef Ricky Moore, James Beard Nominee and owner of the Saltbox Seafood Joints with Kristi Vincent Johnson, founder of The Triangle Dance Project; Nicole Thompson of Discover Durham Inc. with ShaLeigh Comerford of ShaLeigh Dance Works; and Senator Mike Woodard, state senator for District 22 with Nicole Oxendine, owner of Empower Dance Studio.
The event was hosted by NC native, Clay Aiken and a welcome was provided by Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neal. Wool E. Bull and Beaver Queen, Pain Fonda made special appearances, competing in their own dance-off to classic movie songs.
“Dancing With The Carolina Stars” was presented by the Adam Dickinson Realty Group.
While the competition was close, ultimately, Jennings Brody and David Therrell won the competition.
“We’re pleased that so many people came out to support the Carolina Theatre for our first ‘Dancing With The Carolina Stars’ fundraiser,” says Randy McKay, President and CEO of the Carolina Theatre. “This kind of support from the community means that the theater can continue presenting thought-provoking live events, films, and children’s educational programming.”
