Event to Feature Local Durham Celebrities Paired with Professional Dancers to Support the Theater

DURHAM, NC — MARCH 23, 2022 — The Carolina Theatre of Durham will host “Dancing With The Carolina Stars” on Monday, May 16 at 7 pm. The event is a fundraiser to support the Carolina Theatre, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

“Dancing With The Carolina Stars” will feature local celebrities paired with professional dancers in a competition to raise funds for the theater. Guests will vote for their favorite dance duo to win. In addition to the dance competition, the fundraiser will also host live and silent auctions. “Dancing With The Carolina Stars” is presented by Adam Dickinson Realty Group.

“Dancing With The Carolina Stars” will feature Jennings Brody, owner of Parker and Otis, Nadira Hurley, owner of Vert and Vogue, Chef Ricky Moore, James Beard Nominee and owner of The Saltbox Seafood Joint, Nicole Thompson, President and CEO of Downtown Durham, and Senator Mike Woodard, state senator for District 22, which serves Durham. 

The stars will be partnered with professional dancers which include ShaLeigh Commerford of ShaLeigh Dance Works, Willie Hinton of the Carolina Ballet, Kristi Johnson of North Carolina Central University and The Triangle Dance Project, Nicole Oxendine of Empower Dance Studio, and professional ballroom dancer, David Therrell.

“Dancing With The Carolina Stars” will also feature a welcome from Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neil, as well as special appearances by Wool E. Bull and former Beaver Queen, Pain Fonda.

Funds raised from “Dancing With The Carolina Stars” will support the theater’s live events, film, and educational programs. The Carolina Theatre’s programs focus on bringing vibrant, thought-provoking artists to downtown Durham that contribute to the region’s cultural and economic vitality.

The Carolina Theatre has implemented multiple safety measures including upgrading its air filtration systems to purify indoor air quality, adding enhanced cleaning methods and touchless payment options, and increasing the number of hand sanitizer stations around the building. Masks are recommended to be worn in the theater, but are no longer required.
