Community performance of the live musical book adaptation open to the public
DURHAM, NC — JANUARY XX, 2026 — The Carolina Theatre of Durham presents a unique matinee community show of “The Remember Balloons” on January 28 at 1PM as the first performance in the January- June 2026 season of its Arts Discovery Educational Series (ADES). Tickets can be purchased at the box office and online at carolinatheatre.org.
“The Remember Balloons” adapts the children’s book of the same name, to a touching story for the stage. The show follows a boy named James who loves to hear about his Grandpa’s balloons filled with memories from his past. When his Grandpa’s balloons begin to float away, James is heartbroken. While his Grandpa ultimately loses all his balloons, James realizes he has many more than before, and it’s up to him to share those balloons, one by one.
The performance will be accompanied by an original score and digital projections, creating a captivating dance-theatre experience suitable for multi-generational audiences to explore the themes of love, joy, loss, grief and family connection, particularly in the context of Alzheimer’s disease.
“We created “The Remember Balloons” not only to introduce families and young people to positive and appropriate ways to engage in those difficult conversations but also to immerse them in the whimsical and joyful world of storytelling. Our show is filled with moments that encourage the audience to dance, move, and laugh, offering a sense of playfulness and wonder. We believe it’s essential to balance the more challenging themes with extreme moments of joy and fun, so your child(ren) will experience a full range of emotions- just as life itself offers,” says, Director/Choreographer Dominic Moore-Dunson, Dance Magazine’s 2023 “25 to Watch.”
Local bookshop, Letters Community Bookshop will have a table at the event, before and after the show, where the book “Remember Balloons” can be purchased. As well, representatives from Dementia Inclusive Durham, Duke Dementia Family Support, Reflections at The Nasher and Alzheimer’s Association will be present with tables at the event.
The Arts Discovery Educational Series provides affordable field trip opportunities for schools across the Triangle. The Carolina Theatre also partners with Durham Public Schools to provide complimentary tickets made possible through the generosity of sponsors and donors.
