Carolina Theatre of Durham Receives Grant from North Carolina Humanities

December 7, 2023 by Sandy Lerebours

DURHAM, NC — December 7, 2023 — Carolina Theatre of Durham has received a Community Engagement Grant from North Carolina Humanities. This grant will help present programming for the 10th anniversary of the theater’s “Confronting Change” exhibit and share the stories of the brave community members who fought for the integration of the Carolina Theatre in the 1960s.

“We are grateful to be among the organizations North Carolina Humanities selected to receive grant funding,” said Randy McKay, President and CEO.

This important grant funding will support the 10th anniversary of the Confronting Change exhibit in 2024, which commemorates the efforts of community leaders and individuals with lived experience who fought for the integration of the theater in the 1960s. The Civil Rights Committee was formed to create the content for the exhibit and ensure the history of the theater and its role in shaping Durham’s social evolution would be shared in an authentic and meaningful way. The year 2024 will also mark the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, a monumental milestone which continues to impact social and cultural transformation locally, regionally, and nationally.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 5:30-7:00 PM, the theater will host a public reception to honor the 10th anniversary of the exhibit installation with a short documentary screening, refreshments, and featured speakers, including those who participated in the protests during the 1950s and 1960s. This is the first time the Carolina Theatre of Durham has received a grant from North Carolina Humanities, one of the oldest and largest cultural funders in North Carolina.

The 10th anniversary of the “Confronting Change” exhibit is made possible by a grant from North Carolina Humanities, a statewide nonprofit and the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
