Carolina Theatre of Durham Presents a New Season of The Wavemakers Series
August 12, 2024 by
Series Curated by Grammy-Nominated Singer Rissi Palmer
DURHAM, NC —August 12, 2024— The Carolina Theatre of Durham presents a new season of The Wavemakers Series, September 26, 2024, to April 17, 2025.
The Wavemakers Series is a groundbreaking performance series, dedicated to celebrating diverse voices and discovering your new favorite artists. Wavemakers spotlights emerging and innovative talents with exceptional artistry within the Country and Americana genres, hand-selected by Grammy-nominated singer Rissi Palmer.
“There are so many great, interesting artists and people of color within Americana and Country music that are not just making great music, but are great people,” exclaimed Palmer. With its unique format, the Wavemakers Series allows the audience to get to know how great these artists are.
Wavemakers is more than a concert series, it’s a dynamic experience that blends the lines between interview and concert in a seamless journey with the artist and their craft. Guests can participate in a Q&A to conclude the evening.
“You get to meet them up close and personal, you get to talk to them, and I’m talking to them,” added Palmer, who expertly facilitates the intimate interview, performance, and question and answer session with the featured artists.
Palmer is passionate and has extensive experience hosting conversations with artists and providing platforms to showcase their talent. She does this by highlighting country artists of color and those who have been marginalized in mainstream country music, through her radio show Color Me Country with Rissi Palmer on Apple Music Country; her Color Me Country Artist Grant Fund, designed to support new country artists of color who are just beginning to build their music careers; and now, through The Wavemakers Series at the Carolina Theatre.
“I know the importance of having someone advocate for you and how it can often lead to a breakthrough… I wanted to make that accessible, while also exposing the Carolina Theatre audience to artists they may not have heard about for a few more years,” stated Palmer.
The series started in 2023 with performances by Southern fusion songstress, Denitia, and Nashville-based singer-songwriter, Gabe Lee. Now in its second season, the series has expanded to feature four artists including Texas-raised singer-songwriter Madeline Edwards, sister duo SistaStrings, 2021 NPR Tiny Desk Contest winner, Neffy, and Venezuelan and Appalachian folk fusion group, Larry and Joe.
Don’t miss your chance to see these up-and-coming artists as part of The Wavemakers Series at the Carolina Theatre starting September 26, 2024. Tickets are available at the box office and at the Carolina Theatre’s website.
