Carolina Theatre & Duke Performances To Partner On 3 Concerts In 2018

The Carolina Theatre of Durham and Duke Performances are excited to co-present three extraordinary performing arts shows in 2018: Take Me to the River: Memphis Soul & R&B Revue featuring William Bell, Bobby Rush & Don Bryant, Gregory Porter, and Diego El Cigala The Carolina Theatre and Duke Performances are thrilled to extend their co-presenting relationship into another season of arts performances. The cooperation between two prominent parts of the Durham community is designed to help build a bridge between Duke students and the city.

William Bell, Bobby Rush, and Don Bryant will be performing their show, Take Me to the River, at the Carolina Theatre on Thursday, January 25 at 8 p.m. William Bell, Bobby Rush, and Don Bryant have all been staples in the soul music scene for a long time. The three have worked with artists such as, Otis Redding, Tina Turner, and Al Green, among others. Additionally, Bell and Rush won Grammys in 2017. Take Me to the River has earned rave reviews so far, with the Boston Globe proclaiming that “Take Me to the River reminds us where all the great music came from.”

Gregory Porter will be performing at the Carolina Theatre on Sunday, March 4 at 8 p.m. Porter’s performance will mark his third with Duke Performances. The jazz singer was able to sell out the previous two performances. Porter has won two Grammys for Best Jazz Vocal Album (2013 and 2017). The Guardian has described Porter as “a jazz singer of thrilling presence and a booming baritone with a gift for earthy refinement and soaring uplift.”

Diego El Cigala will be performing at the Carolina Theatre on Saturday, March 31 at 8 P.M. El Cigala got his start in the flamenco genre, but his artistry has grown to include other Latin genres, including Cuban, tango and salsa. He has won a Latin Grammy for his tango work. The Sydney Morning Herald raved about his performance, saying, “Diego El Cigala joins the likes of Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and Giuseppe Di Stefano as one of the great singers of the past hundred years.”

Season tickets to all three shows are on sale now. Tickets for Take Me to the River and Porter start at $35 and tickets to El Cigala start at $30.
