Volunteer Spotlight: Anne Jones

April 18, 2024 by Sandy Lerebours

Volunteers are essential to the operation of the Carolina Theatre. More than 150 volunteers help execute our comprehensive arts programs including live performances, educational programming, as well as a nationally respected film program.

During National Volunteer Month, we spoke with new volunteer, Anne Jones about why she started volunteering at the Carolina Theatre.

CTD: What is your favorite part about volunteering at the Carolina Theatre?
AJ: It is so satisfying to know that I am contributing to the preservation of our beautiful historic building, and contributing to providing an affordable welcoming venue for all people of Durham’s rich and diverse community to enjoy arts and entertainment.

CTD: How long have you volunteered at the Carolina Theatre?
AJ: February 2023

CTD: What is your favorite volunteer role?
AJ: Ticket scanner. I love welcoming people as they come in. There is not too much time to chat, but patrons really appreciate a smile, a  ‘how are you’, a ‘thank you for coming’ and an ‘enjoy the show’. We volunteers receive many thank you’s for what we do too, patrons are so appreciative!

CTD: Do you have a favorite memory that you would like to share from your volunteer experience?
AJ: At the end of 2023 we hosted the Ukranian ballet company performing Snow White. After all the patrons were in and the show had begun, I was fortunate enough to be able to speak with the company member who was staffing the merchandise table. It was my privilege to listen to his story of the war in Ukraine and how ordinary Ukrainians are coping. It is unlikely that I would have had an opportunity like that if I hadn’t been a volunteer.

CTD: Why did you start volunteering at the Carolina Theatre?
AJ: I had been interested in volunteering for many years, but we all know how life gets in the way of extracurricular activities. So, when I finally retired from nursing, it was one of the first things on my to-do list that I signed up for.

CTD: What is a favorite movie or show you saw at the theater?
AJ: That is a difficult question! There are many. The Larry and Joe concert that was part of the Family Saturday Series, Rissi Palmer’s Wavemaker series, and Keb Mo.
