On September 7, the Carolina Theatre of Durham will screen the award-winning documentary “Sloane: A Jazz Singer” followed by a discussion moderated by local singer-songwriter, cellist, and arts educator Shana Tucker.

Below, Shana shares her reflections on the documentary “Sloane: A Jazz Singer” and the legacy of its subject Carol Sloane.

“Sloane: A Jazz Singer” is a heartfelt and beautifully crafted documentary that pays tribute to the life and artistry of Carol Sloane, the jazz vocalist who, despite her immense talent, never received the widespread, worldwide recognition she deserved. This film reminds us that, for all the talents we know as household names, there are other significant (albeit) unsung musical heroes, particularly in the jazz world, where artistic brilliance often goes unnoticed by the mainstream.

Sloane’s voice, characterized by warmth, precision, and beautiful, emotional depth, is nothing short of mesmerizing. The film does a remarkable job of showcasing her inimitable artistry and captivating career trajectory—however foiled by timing of both industry and personal events— and weaves in performances that highlight her ability to breathe new life into any/every jazz standard she touched. Sloane’s interpretations are soulful, nuanced, and deeply personal … she is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest jazz singers the world never knew.

The film also delves into Sloane’s ties to North Carolina, which played a significant role in her life and career. Her connection to the state is evident, not only through the community of NC musicians she influenced through her performances and by the extension of her musical network, but also in the support she received from local jazz enthusiasts who recognized and celebrated her talent—more acutely, perhaps, than the rest of the world carried. In her later life, Sloane’s continued musical mentorship, including students at North Carolina Central University and Duke University as witnessed in the film, further attests to her commitment to igniting the spark of artistic excellence in those with hearts calibrated for “the jazz.” This regional connection adds a layer of intimacy to the documentary, grounding Sloane’s story in a specific cultural and regional context that enriches the narrative for this North Carolinian and perhaps many others who have and will experience the film.

“Sloane: A Jazz Singer” is more than just a documentary: it is ambition, creativity, ingenuity, hope, disappointment,
resolve, all narrated through a “song story” of the human condition. It’s a celebration of a worthy artist whose significant contributions to jazz require remembrance and honor. The film is a must-see for jazz vocalists, jazz lovers, and just about anyone interested in discovering the vibrant story of an unheralded, hidden gem who managed to shape the world of jazz music, despite the obstacles of life.
