Meet Linda Shropshire

May 8, 2024 by Sandy Lerebours

The Carolina Theatre’s annual Dancing With The Carolina Stars fundraiser takes place on May 21! Audience members will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite local stars and even get to mingle with them after the event. We spoke with Linda Shropshire, Founder of Ella West Gallery, about why it is important to support the arts in Durham.

CTD: Why did you decide to get involved with the Carolina Theatre’s fundraiser, Dancing With The Carolina Stars?

Linda Shropshire: I am convinced that one of the greatest contributions we can make to the world is to give back. There is a proverb, “to whom much is given, much is expected.” I live by this rule. The Carolina Theatre has always been in the backdrop of my life. From Saturday matinees and concerts to the traditional Nutcracker with my kids. I have always looked at it as our local Apollo Theatre. I am honored to give back to this place I have enjoyed so much.

CTD: Why is it important to support the arts in Durham?

LS: I can’t imagine a community without the arts. In so many ways the arts inspire us, provoke us, and call us to different ways of thinking and being.  Durham is at once the City of Medicine, the city of Academic Excellence, and the city of an ever growing creative class. Supporting the arts keeps our city alive and keeps us listed as one of the top places to live in the United States.

CTD: Can you tell us a bit about your dance experience? How are you feeling about getting on stage?

LS: I have very limited dance experience. I feel like I have two left feet. However, I have taken a Salsa class or two. At one point I was also a Zumba instructor and I raised my kids (now 23 and 26) having our own dance parties in the middle of our living room. I have quite a bit going on in my personal life right now. Dancing with the Stars represents self-care for me. When I am practicing, I think of nothing else but my steps and moves. It has been a joy to participate. I am not ready for the stage yet, but I will be. My dance partner, Juan, is a patient and gifted instructor.

Please join us for a spectacular night of entertainment to support the arts in Durham and bring both local artists and national touring acts to the Carolina Theatre stage. Dancing With The Carolina Stars takes over Fletcher Hall on Tuesday, May 21st starting at 6:00 PM and promises dancing thrills and special surprises you won’t want to miss!
