Meet Jason Peace

April 10, 2024 by Sandy Lerebours

The Carolina Theatre’s annual Dancing With The Carolina Stars fundraiser takes place on May 21! Audience members will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite local stars and even get to mingle with them after the event. We caught up with Jason Peace from Meals on Wheels Durham about bringing equitable access to the arts to all.

CTD: Why did you decide to get involved with the Carolina Theatre’s fundraiser, Dancing With The Carolina Stars?

JP: I initially got involved in this fundraiser at the behest of a former board member and from the encouragement of my wife. They both know this is almost something that is entirely out of my comfort zone, but something that I’m looking forward to experiencing.

CTD: Why is it important to support the arts in Durham?

JP: I think it’s critical for our communities to support the arts because it affords the opportunity to experience and learn about things that we otherwise wouldn’t. The arts expose the good, bad, and sometimes the misunderstood in our society. It can help provide direction in life and understanding needed for healing. It is my hope that this fundraiser helps to create an increased enthusiasm regarding equitable access to the arts, for black and brown communities in particular.

CTD: How do you feel about performing on stage? What are you most excited about with this event?

JP: My dance experience…I have none! Outside of a 2-step, an occasional line dance, or the Waltz I stumbled through during a high school ball some 30 years ago, I have absolutely no dancing experience! So, you can imagine that I’m a little concerned about getting on stage to dance. However, I’m going to practice as much positive self-talk as possible to get me through.

Jason will be paired up with Tanu Sharma, who dances the classical Indian dance form Kathak. Inspiring enthusiasm for the arts and positive energy is what this event is all about and we are looking very forward to seeing Jason show off his moves!

Join the Carolina Theatre to cheer on all of our dancers, connect with old friends, and meet some new ones. Chef Paris will be preparing some tantalizing hors d’oeuvres and desserts, local bands will provide some energetic tunes, and there will even be a special dance number performed by some very familiar faces!

Make sure to buy your tickets now to experience the unforgettable performance by Jason and Tanu!
