Honored by the City of Durham: Reflecting on a Century of Impact

On April 20, the City of Durham formally commemorated the Carolina Theatre’s 100-year anniversary at their City Council meeting, recognizing the institution for a century of cultural and civic impact.

As the theater continues celebrating its centennial year, it is reminded that this accomplishment is more than a measure of time, but a reflection of the passionate audiences, community support and local relationships that have shaped the organization into what it is today.

“We’re humbly grateful to the City of Durham for this milestone, as well as to the community members who have visited, supported and cared for our theater,” said Randy McKay, president and CEO.

Shaped by history

Since opening in 1926, the Carolina Theatre has served as a gathering place for residents and visitors to come together through arts and shared experiences.

As a long-enduring institution, the theater has remained a constant through decades of change, from being a part of Durham’s Civil Rights Movement and surviving a scheduled demolition to navigating a global pandemic and persevering through the shift to digital media.

Now, the theater not only stands as a defining Durham landmark but contributes as an active participant in the city’s arts ecosystem.

This means:

1. Supporting local artists and nonprofit organizations, through programs like Wavemakers or partnerships with the Durham Arts Council and Durham Art Guild
2. Introducing inclusive programming, including their Sensory-Friendly Film Series and Family Saturdays
3. Generating $10 million in annual economic impact

In addition to its broader cultural significance, some of the Carolina Theatre’s greatest achievements are the personal connections that have cemented the organization and have allowed it to bring audiences together.

Looking ahead to our next century

As the theater looks toward its next century, community support is essential for sustaining the initiatives that allow them to stay true to the mission of keeping arts at the forefront of Bull City.
