Cultivating Community with Empower Dance Studio
March 12, 2025 by
As Empower Dance Studio celebrates 10 years in the community, can you tell us more about how it all started?
Empower Dance Studio was born out of a vision to create a space where dancers of all abilities and backgrounds could thrive. As a dance educator, I saw a gap in how self-confidence and self-expression were nurtured in young dancers. Many students struggled to feel seen or valued in traditional dance spaces, and I wanted to change that. Drawing on my background in dance movement therapy and entrepreneurship, I founded Empower Dance Studio in 2015. Over the past 10 years, we’ve grown into a vibrant community where dance is more than movement—it’s empowerment.

What types of classes and programs do you offer? Which of those styles really speaks to you?
At Empower, we offer a range of classes for all ages and levels, including ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, tap, acro, and more. Our Core Program emphasizes age-appropriate progression with color-coded dancewear for each level. We also have an Academy program for pre-professional dancers and a thriving Adult Program for those seeking to reconnect with dance. Personally, contemporary and jazz resonate with me deeply. They allow for creative expression while fostering technical excellence—a perfect combination for telling impactful stories through movement.
We love hosting Empower’s Annual Recital at the Carolina Theatre. How long have you and your students been dancing on our stage? Why the Carolina Theatre?
Our partnership with the Carolina Theatre has been a cornerstone of our journey. We’ve been hosting our Annual Recital there for almost as long as we’ve existed! The venue’s historical significance and stunning atmosphere make it the perfect stage to celebrate our dancers’ growth and achievements. Dancing at the Carolina Theatre feels like a rite of passage for our students, and it’s a space that truly elevates their performances.

What are some of your most memorable dance pieces you’ve done with your students?
So many pieces come to mind! One that stands out is our tribute to Debbie Allen, which was both a celebration of her legacy and a showcase of our dancers’ versatility. Another highlight was when our students led a performance in the Carolina Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. Watching them grow artistically and rise to such prestigious opportunities is incredibly rewarding.
What is the Empower Dance Foundation and how does it impact students and their families?
The Empower Dance Foundation is our nonprofit arm, dedicated to making dance accessible to everyone. Through scholarships, outreach programs, and partnerships, we’re able to provide opportunities for dancers who might not otherwise have access to quality training. It’s a vital part of our mission to foster a culture of generosity, community, and mutual support. The foundation has been a lifeline for many families and a testament to the power of dance to bring people together.
