Celebrate Spooky Season at the Carolina Theatre

October 1, 2023 by Sandy Lerebours

The air has chilled, the leaves have begun to fall, and spooky season has begun! The Carolina Theatre of Durham offers film series, screenings, and special events all season long to keep the creepy vibes going!

SplatterFlix

From October 9-15, Retro Film Series reanimates sixteen of the goriest, scariest horror movies ever made, for screening at the Carolina Theatre as part of our SplatterFlix Film Series. This year’s films include classics like “The Thing,” “Aliens,” “The Fog,” “Gremlins,” “Child’s Play,”  and more.

The Devils

Ken Russell’s The Devils plays at the Carolina Theatre October 15- November 1. When the film was released in 1971, it was heavily censored due to its provocative religious and sexual imagery. The Carolina Theatre is one of the select theatres to screen the film in its entirety, during this exclusive, uncut re-release.

Clue and Death Becomes Her

Retro Film Series brings a campy, cult classic double feature to the Carolina Theatre on October 16, with a screening of Clue and Death Becomes Her.

The Innocents

The Innocents, a haunting story of possession and madness, plays at the Carolina Theatre as part of our RetroClassics Film Series.

Casper and Beetlejuice

Retro Film Series brings a supernatural feel-good family-friendly double feature to the Carolina Theatre on October 23, with a screening of Casper and Beetlejuice.

Ballet Nepantla: Mística

Ballet Nepantla brings their dance work “Mística” to the Carolina Theatre on October 27. “Mística” honors their ancestors by celebrating the creative and spiritual energies of our indigenous, Afro, and Hispanic roots and commemorating the traditions of Día De Muertos through inventive uses of blacklight and expressive fusion of ballet folklorico and contemporary dance.

The Magician: Screening and Live Score

The Carolina Theatre presents a screening of “The Magician” with a live score.

This one-night-only event melds Rex Ingram’s silent horror film, released the same year the Carolina Theatre opened, with the premiere performance of an original live score written by Triangle-based avant-garde trio Stack / Pratt / Mislock, comprised of Andy Stack (Wye Oak), Kelly Pratt (Father John Misty) and Tim Mislock (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”).

9th Annual Rocky Horror Picture Show Halloween Ball

Retro Film Series presents Rocky Horror Picture Show Halloween Ball on October 30 & 31. This is more than just a screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” it is a full-theatrical, FX-driven, light show-blazing, fog-blowing, call-backing, motion picture extravaganza! Fasten your garter belt and come up to the Carolina Theatre’s historic 1000-seat lab and see what’s on the slab! This madcap musical begins when rain-soaked Brad and Janet take refuge in the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite mad scientist from outer space who is about to unveil his greatest creation! This annual Retro tradition is guaranteed to thrill you, chill you, and fulfill you!

Whether it’s film screenings or live events the Carolina Theatre has spooky programming to celebrate all season long, and beyond!
